The basis of our pellets
From wood waste to a valuable source of energy
The quality of wood pellets is determined long before the actual production process begins. The type, origin and processing of the raw materials used are all important factors.
To produce our wood pellets, we use only PEFC-certified raw materials from sawmills and forestry operations located within the immediate catchment area of our pellet plants (link to locations). The raw materials are predominantly by-products that are automatically generated during wood processing, such as:
- sawdust
- wood chips and offcuts
- planer shavings
To a lesser extent, roundwood from thinning operations is also used, as it is not suitable for producing sawn timber.
PEFC: for regenerative heat
PEFC is the world’s largest independent certification system for sustainable forestry. Timber products bearing this seal come from forests managed in an environmentally, economically and socially responsible manner. This means:
- No more timber is harvested than can regrow.
- Forests, biodiversity, soils and water bodies are protected.
- The origin of the wood is verified and legal.
- Social standards and fair working conditions are upheld.
- The entire supply chain is certified.
PEFC thus stands for transparent, responsible sourcing of raw materials – an important part of ensuring the quality and sustainability of our high-quality wood pellets.
Frequently Asked Questions
It takes around 6–7 loose cubic metres of waste wood from sawmills and timber processing to produce 1 tonne of pellets. To put it in perspective, that is roughly equivalent to 40 to 47 bathtubs filled with natural raw materials.
For consumers, the PEFC label means that the pellets they buy have been reliably and rigorously produced from sustainable raw materials. This builds trust, makes the wood’s origin traceable, and ensures that choosing wood pellets is also a choice for responsible resource conservation.
In the ÖKO TEST consumer magazine issue no. 11/23, bagged pellets from 14 brands were tested. The “wohl und warm” brand was the only one to be rated “very good”.
The testing laboratory confirmed that our pellets meet very high quality standards in accordance with ENplus A1 criteria. We also impressed in terms of transparency, as we considered it a matter of course to disclose our raw material sources and verify the origin of our raw materials, including on our delivery notes: We use only untreated, PEFC-certified raw materials and document the entire supply chain.
We are the only company in the test to use sack liners containing 50% recycled material and offer our customers a convenient return service for empty sack liners and pallets – for a more sustainable value chain.
