Sustainability right from the start at ECB
Our story begins with a clear goal: renewable energy for all
Since our foundation over 20 years ago, we have been pursuing a vision that continues to shape everything we do today: rethinking energy. The company’s founders, Thomas Bischof and Dr Ulrich Kaier, wanted a future based on renewable resources.
This aspiration is not just part of our corporate philosophy – it’s also reflected in our name. EC Bioenergie stands for responsibility, awareness and our contribution to a sustainable energy supply.
Committed to sustainability
For us, sustainability is not just a trend, but part of our identity. From raw materials to delivery, we focus on regional supply chains, renewable energy and the respectful use of natural resources.
Our goal: sustainable heating – for us, for our region and for future generations
Raw materials from transparent sources
We use only wood from certified sustainable forestry (PEFC). This ensures that our raw materials are sourced responsibly.
Energy from renewable raw materials
We need heat to dry the raw material for our wood pellets. We obtain this heat from the combustion of biomass – primarily from landscape management waste. By using this natural biomass sourced from the local region, we can avoid relying on fossil fuels that have been transported long distances.
At our sites in Hardegsen, Mudau and Dotternhausen, we use combined heat and power (CHP) to generate both heat and electricity in accordance with the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), thereby contributing to a particularly efficient use of the biomass employed. At the Dotternhausen site, we also operate a local heating network.

The Renewable Energy Act (EEG) governs the expansion, remuneration, grid connection and prioritisation of renewable energy in Germany – with the aim of achieving a power supply that is virtually 100% climate-neutral.
How we practise sustainability. Just as we have done for over 20 years.
- Producing locally
- Keeping transport distances short
- Reducing emissions
- Using resources wisely
Thanks to our network of sites and our own fleet of vehicles, we have short delivery routes, which helps us reduce emissions and ensures a direct, reliable supply to our customers. For our pellet production, we mainly use wood waste from sawmills, which helps us conserve valuable resources.
Sustainability doesn’t stop at packaging
Our bagged goods are already made from film containing 50% recycled material. Through our take-back service for bagging film and pallets, we work with our customers to close the material loop.

Strong together through sustainability
We want to bring warmth not only to homes but also to hearts. That’s why we support projects that give hope, strengthen communities and bring nature to life. ECB is committed to helping where people and the environment
need support. We help children’s hospices, facilitate projects for kids to experience nature, and provide schools with insights into renewable energy. We’re also a member of the Regional Producers’ Association of Southern Lower Saxony and are thus committed to upholding our responsibility to keep our region strong.
